Title: Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Vol 1
Format: LP
Label: Dark Entries
Country: USA
Price: $18.00
"Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Volume 1 is Dark Entries first compilation of underground music from San Francisco (and the greater Bay Area) in the 1980s. Towards the end of the 70s, San Francisco experimental music clashed with the aftermath of punk and gave birth to a vibrant underground scene. By the early to mid 80s the DIY music scene of the Bay Area was a hotbed for experimental and quirky new wave, post punk, and synthpop, quite similar to New Yorks No Wave scene and Berlins Neue Deutsche Welle. This compilation literally connects the (transit) lines between these varied musical offerings and tells the secret story of eleven forgotten Bay Area bands and contains four previously unreleased tracks on vinyl, until now! BART Volume 1 features a Korg-heavy assault from Danvilles utterly obscure Nominal State; two little-known left-field electronic dance gems from Batang Frisco and Quiet Room; Berkeleys answer to darkwave, Necropolis of Love; a synth-driven drama fest from drag performance troupe Wasp Women; quirky lo-fi gothic pop from one man band Distant Thunder; a gay Hi-NRG anthem delivered by Danny Boy and the Serious Party Gods; two lesser know gems from SF synth legends Voice Farm and Los Microwaves; and the futuristic pulsing synth-punk of Standard of Living and the Units. All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a large 6-panel fold out poster by with liner notes by Johnny Ray Huston, original photos, fliers and artwork documenting this fertile period. BART is more widely know as the acronym for Bay Area Rapid Transit, the main rail transportation system for the San Francisco Bay Area and the band on this compilation. This LP is by no means a definitive compilation but merely opens the tunnel to the underground sounds of the Bay!" - Dark Entries.

Title: Flesh Records
Format: CD
Label: Haswellediger & Co. Gallery
Country: USA
Price: $14.25
"Haswellediger presents FLESH RECORDS, a CD/Audio Exhibition with fifteen tracks from a new generation of artists excited by the intimacy of sound and its possibilities as a plastic art. The works, many of which were composed specifically for this project, range in shape and tone from Romantic to Pop to Cinematic and Sculptural/Body based. What they have in common is perhaps the idea that sound-art, with its lack of visual stimuli, connects us to an earlier time, both personally and collectively, when the body intuitively acted as artist, muse and medium. ARTISTS: RITA ACKERMANN (Diadal, Angelblood, etc..), RICHARD ALDRICH (Hurray), MIKE BOUCHET, BOZIDAR BRAZDA, OLAF BREUNING, C.R.E.E.,P, PIA DEHNE & MARK O, SARA GLAXIA, K8 HARDY, JOHANNES ATLI HINRIKSSON, MARIE-EVE JETZER, PAUL-AYMAR MOURGUE DALGUE, ANNA PARKINA, AIDA RUILOVA & NANCY GARCIA (Monotract) & TANER TUMKAYA." - Haswellediger & Co. Title: FM-BX Society Tape Vol. 1
Format: LP
Label: S-S
Country: USA
Price: $10.00
"S.S. Records is pleased to present the first vinyl edition of the FM-BX Society Tape Vol. 1. Originally released in 1981 only on cassette, with a limited run of 200, FM-BX V1 was the first in a series of compilation tapes released by the staff of a radio station in Brussels, Belgium. Needless to say, not many tapes made it around, and very few survive today. Id say that is a shame but with this vinyl release, the word will get out about the bands on this tape, albeit a few decades after its initial release! FM-BX V1 features three bands, two from Belgium, one from Scotland. The Belgium bands are Isolation Ward and Unit 4. Isolation Ward are known in underground synth collector circles, as they had a bit of a run after their debut on this release. Bleak and futuristic, Isolation Ward fuse post punk with early 80s synth sounds and a DIY approach. The stars of FM-BX are the all-woman foursome Unit 4. Little is known about the band or their current whereabouts. No problem because their music is all you need to tell you that they had something special going. By their sound, the influences are obvious: Kleenex, Delta 5, and the Raincoats all reverberate here though less slick than any of those bands. Unit 4s aesthetics are more akin to the Petticoats and, at times, the Shaggs. This is truly wonderful punk rock. From Scotland comes the Topplers. Great stuff. Teens with an ear towards the TV Personalities, The Times, and Subway Sect. 500 pressed, housed in a sleeve cobbled together from the original cassette release." -S-S

Title: Lagos Disco Inferno
Format: Double LP
Label: Academy
Country: USA
Price: $17.50
"Welcome to the Lagos Disco Inferno, the first compilation of rare, Nigerian Disco to be released outside of Africa. Compiled by Frank Gossner (of Voodoofunk.com fame), this record contains 12 tracks that represent the sound of Lagos in the late 1970s. Dean Disi (Music Journalist and formerly Director of Lagos based label TYC Records) wrote the liner notes for this album: It was the era of sheer ecstasy. The music not only represents the vibrancy of youthful expressionism of the time but is also deeply rooted in African rhythm though not traditional in phraseology. This collection of songs marks the development of Nigerian urban pop culture. There was diametric difference in the music of the discos and the music play by the groups. Disco music as played by the DJs was essentially western. The fans could connect with this easily. It was hip, urban and stimulating. The young Nigerian groups were hooked on it and tried to play it but with a distinctive African stamp of their own. Some of the artists on this record were stars of their times while others remained in obscurity. Lagos, a uniquely vibrant, gritty, energetic and sometimes quite dangerous tropical metropolis has always been much more than just a city. A state of mind where third world poverty met the oil boom, where African traditions clashed with Western decadence. Make no mistake, this stuff will have you dance in a feverish rush in no time." - Academy.

Title: Learning for Insipid Zeal = Pool Water, People Pollution, Imaginary Unit In Electronics
Format: One Sided LP
Label: American Tapes
Country: USA
Price: $12.00
"Whoa! Hold on now! Heres the big one! All recorded in a one week in late April, heres the line up: Track One ) Pool Water: Super new heavy unit with Connelly, Zone One and Mega Mike Collino. Violin, kitchen percussion, slow tapes - every ingredient to make your pulse quicken/slow-en!!! The track sounds more akin to a Cook Labs recording of a train journey thru a snow covered mountain at midnight rather than three mug blokes in ultra concentrated jam mode.... Will make your skin stand at attention, soldier!! Recorded in Inzane-Dimension sound with the IZTF in full effect mode. Mad style: File Under: Misshapen Jam Growths. Track Two ) People Pollution: What the? Ultra distorted retardo basement rock trio with Juice & Raddix (AKA Raven Strain Matt and Fag Health AKA Sick Llama Heath) on guitar and bass and Inzane on plodding go nowhere drumming. Was meant to be a Justice-style garage unit turned Frankenstein- style into a twisted distorted Mega-mess! Recorded under the influence of afternoon sun, left over Milwaukee Beasts from the Aries Assault party, and the shadows of the dank interiors of the Frying Pan. WARNING! = worst guitar/bass tone on earth!! Would make Joe Young, Vorkriegphase, and Wretched sell they kitty littered amp speakers for opening a Baskin and Robins Franchise. Just a stinking rocking mess of a track!! More to come by this mutant unit! Name taken from a strange puzzle the puzzler master Tovah found in a rotten Lansing thrift store. Track Three ) Imaginary Unit in Electronics: Im sure yall are like "Why not just call the jam J?" Well, Im not quite sold on the concept of being that you cant take the square root of a negative, but you CAN call it a J and then next thing you know it has a value of 1 or-1. Huh? When rad Instructor Max got asked the question by a stunned Electrical Math class, he just looked down, counted his voltage, current, and resistance markers and said, "Well, thats a discussion for Carl Jung." Shit, lost me too. Like the button my crazed mom had (no ya turkey, not the OVERSEXED one) , = "Ninety Percent of Life is Just Showing Up." True. Soundtrack for confusion, included. So what the hell else for this heavy pack? How about a stupid-colorful overload hand painted collab jackets with artist Raymond Salvatore Harmon, painted in Automatic Writing Style. Why? Cause Tyfuss once told me "Zines and Collaborations keep the underground scene together and alive" You got it!!! Killer flow and strange new sounds will leave your day inzanity haunted with this new comp platter!!! Go nutzo young player. Edition of 100, numbered, hand done, THE WORKS." - American Tapes

Title: MTR-01
Format: LP
Label: Macro-Eden
Country: USA
Price: $8.00
"An 18 band one sided LP on gray marble vinyl featuring Temple of Bon Matin, Hop-Frogs Drum Jester Devotional, AMK, Sander Roscoe Wolff, Books on Tape, Kyozin Yueni Dekai, I Heart Lung, Foot Village, Tres Quatro, No Age, BARR, Debaser, Sharon Cheslow, Hestbak, Bavab Bavab, Organisms, Fanboys, and Whitman. With a color collage front cover and a gritty black and white photo of Ed Wilcox (Temple of Bon Matin) for the back, no corners were cut in the making of this album. The record itself is a document of how 18 different bands responded to the challenge of writing a 45 second song. The transitions between songs come so seamlessly that the piece stands as a massive effort by many musicians, rather than a series of individual tunes." - Macro-Eden.

Title: No State No Sound
Format: One Sided LP
Label: American Tapes
Country: USA
Price: $11.50
"Hold on gnaw...last but not least..... the NO STATE NO SOUND comp lp. Dont know what led up to it...think I vaguely remember getting "dared" by Nurse Khrust to put out a record of silence by the crew, not sure, but maybe told Haunted Square D about it....but anyhow.....flashblack to an average but killer brewsday in the late summer, got the crew shooting the gip, no biggy, and Square D rolls up with his "Body Morph" one minute silent track....takes a sec to remember but all right...lets do this. Greh and V invite the now deep crew black to they hut, and on the way I had a walkman in the whip, so i popped in Ds master, hit record and the stop watch for a minute and me and the Connartist sat in silence for a minute and recorded the second track BIRTH REFUSAL. As we got to Grehs, we assembled all the jammers present and hit em up for a minute, all on three different Walkmans all on the original master tape. Was totally strange, Sick Llama was just standing in a yard with the crew looking at him pointing a recorder his way while nothing happened. It was like a very strange gig. So after everyone at the party got recorded/ trapped in NO SOUND, some the garage, some inside a bathroom whilst the crew stared at the close door, someone had the idea to call up some jammers. So No Fucker Johnny, Romero, others all held on the line for a minute of NOTHING. Totally rules. The end result sounds like a Folkways experiment. I ended up coming home and getting busted for "recording silence and not grabbing the Air Condition Window Unit" which was the only reason i went Grehs begin with. Hey, Window AC Unit or not, you are still KOOL with this platter!! Heres the Full Iiterary, recorded in order, no overdubs or tom foolery, no voices nothing, just weird hiss and an occasional bird chirp in lonesome... 1) Body Moprh 2) Birth Refusal 3) Hive Mind 4) Sick Llama 5) New Pledgemaster 6) Tom & John 7) ??????? (we eventually figured out who it is, heres a hint: weighs 90 lbs, goes from 0-Passed out in 3 brews, now in P. Rico) 8) Moontravellers 9) A.C. & Khrust 10) Alicia Warning 11) No Fucker 12) Burning Star Core 13) Hair Police 14) Rodger Stella 15) Damion Romero 16) Hellfire Holly 17) Iron Lung 18) 16 Bitch Pile Up 19) The Haunting All pressed on colored gray vinyl on the new AT style wrapped around sleeve with creepy art, Numbered edition of 200." -American Tapes

"Two years in the making, Showtunes of the Condemned emerges not as a compilation, but a massive unified whole. Spinning, spinning, spinning. A dark, edgy, electronic epic, acting as a Pandoras Box of social and urban anxiety. Title: Songs For Nao - 14 Bands From Japan
Format: CD
Label: Chapter Music
Country: Australia
Price: $12.50
"Songs for Nao (pronounced "now") is a compilation featuring many incredible Japanese artists... Most work in a rarefied world of wide-eyed, folky psych-pop. Songs For Nao includes new tracks by Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Nagisa Ni Te, Tenniscoats, Kazumi Nikaidoh, Yumbo, Andersens, My Pal Foot Foot, Pervenche and more. Songs For Nao is a taste of an incredible music scene. Isolated from the music industry at large, these artists create genuinely inspired music, fresh even to the ears of the most conditioned music-geek. The release is accompanied by a full colour, 16-page booklet featuring extensive liner notes on each band, and beautiful photos by Eigo Shimojo (a member of Eepil Eepil, one of the bands on the compilation)." - Chapter Music. "I moved to Tokyo in September 2002 in search of new experiences, and ended up staying for a year and a half. I worked teaching English part-time at one of the big chain schools in Japan, which was neither here nor there, but when I wasnt working I was going to as many gigs as I could. I already had a couple of Japanese friends before I got there, and through them I was introduced to all these amazing bands, playing in tiny shoebox venues to audiences of usually about 50 people. Most of the best bands I saw seemed to be connected in one way or another to a record label called Majikick, run by Ueno and Saya, the husband and wife team from the band Tenniscoats. They were like the Prince and Princess of this small, vibrant scene, which was built on ideas about freedom, improvisation, fragile melodies and a kind of drug-free psychedelia. The most amazing thing about bands like Tenniscoats, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Andersens and My Pal Foot Foot is how they would sound totally different almost every time you saw them. They always had different lineups and instrumentation and played a completely new set at almost every gig. I couldnt understand how they could all write these incredible songs and then just throw them away and write new ones! Most of the bands had a CD or two on Majikick, or at least a CD-R that they would sell at gigs, and I bought whatever I could get my hands on. I listened to these CDs constantly in my little apartment, and maybe it was just being in a different country, not having my all my records and CDs with me, but it was the first time in years that I could just listen over and over to the same music, and find more to love each time. Apart from Nagisa Ni Te and Maher Shalal Hash Baz, who have had some records released in the US and the UK, it seemed like no-one outside Japan had any idea about these bands that I thought were just incredible. So it seemed like a great idea to put together a compilation, and Songs For Nao is what I came up with. I thought of the title because Nao is the name of two of the sweetest people I met in Japan - one a boy, one a girl - and they both play in bands on the CD." - Guy Blackman; Chapter Music.
